Mind Hacks: Polanski and the Professor
It was 1970, and a white Rolls Royce was gliding through the streets of London. Inside were the obviously disturbed Roman Polanski, the film director still reeling from the murder of his wife, and Richard Gregory, the legendary cognitive psychologist.
Polanski had discovered Gregory's work on visual perception through his book Eye and Brain and decided he wanted to enlist Gregory's help to create a 3D horror movie.
The movie was intended to be revolutionary, taking advantage of the brain's perceptual quirks to make a truly disturbing visual experience.
[...]Interestingly, Gregory also mentions that Polanksi also wanted to use the techniques they developed to make a 3D erotic movie.

Back
I'm back from Park City, sick (is it possible to go to Sundance and not get sick?) I had a good time, met some very cool people from Wholphen and Rooftop films, and also Cinevegas programmer Mike Plante, who curated this year's Frontier Lounge, which was one of the highlights of the festival for me. On display in the lounge were a couple of really nice installations by Daniel Rozen.
I didn't get to see many films (again), just two showings of The Zellner's heartbreaking, funny Goliath (one of four movies total that has ever made me cry. Never you mind what the others are). A swedish film called King of Ping-Pong and The Duplass' Baghead.
I've started working on this vaporous podcast that I keep telling myself I will be cranking out weekly, but it's been very hard to decide on tone and content. I'm hoping it will be a collaborative thing with all my friends, but everyone always seems so busy, it's difficult to get momentum.

Off to the festival!
Getting on a plane to Utah in a couple of hours, I'll post anything interesting while I'm there!

LAist: Vampira Goes to the Great Beyond
Hollywood has lost another legend. Maila Nurmi, who became synonymous with her character, Vampira, passed away in her sleep yesterday at the age of 86.
