SPORE: A Closer Look at SPORE

I need to get as much creative work done this year as possible, because once Spore comes out I will probably get nothing else done ever again.

Marshall McLuhan, the Man and his Message | CBC Archives

He was a man of idioms and idiosyncrasies, deeply intelligent and a soothsayer. He had prescient knowledge of the Internet. Although educated in literature, Marshall McLuhan was known as a pop philosopher because his theories applied to mini-skirts and the twist. For his ability to keep up with the cutting edge, one colleague called him "The Runner." Critics said he destroyed literary values. Today, McLuhan's ideas are new again, applied to the electronic media that he predicted.

Ars Technica review: Delicious Library 2 is out

For anyone not familiar with Delicious Library, it's a Mac application that lets you use your built in iSight or any attatched firewire camera (or bluetooth barcode scanner) to scan books, movies, games... pretty much anything with a barcode that is listed on Amazon.com, and then builds a library of your collection with box covers, pricing and details, and lets you keep track of who you are loaning stuff to, among lots and lots of other things.

DL2 brings some pretty significant new features and a freshly updated UI. At the top of the list is the ability to catalog far more than just media like DVDs and books; users can now keep track of their gadgets, toys, tools, and just about anything else that Amazon carries. Speaking of media, though, DL2 now also catalogs your entire iTunes library, including music, movies, TV shows, and even audiobooks. While one of Delicious Library's most appealing features has always been keeping track of things you lend to friends, though, note that you can't really do much with your iTunes media in DL2 besides keep track of it for record-keeping or insurance purposes (certainly a drawback of going digital).

Other great new DL2 features include the ability to publish a browsable HTML library of all your stuff or just a specific Shelf of selected items, as well as the ability to subscribe to your friends shelves to keep track of their stuff. DL2 will also be the first Mac OS X app to allow AppleScripts to live anywhere in the app's menu structure. Per the example, a user could create an 'Import from FileMaker' AppleScript for DL2 that lives under the File > Import menu--a script that is not bound to the AppleScript menu.

I purchased my upgrade the moment I saw that the new version was available, and I'm not sorry. This is an incredibly slick, lovingly detailed application that should be mandatory for every Mac owning movie/music/book/etc curator/collector.

Gizmodo: Casio Exilim EX-F1 Slow-Mo Super Cam

Casio's EX-F1 still camera will shoot 600fps slo-motion video at slightly less than standard def. The total list of features on this little camera is pretty compelling, motion detection for shot start, full resolution 6 megapixel stills at 60fps. For 1k it's pretty compelling as a still camera that will shoot some impressive short video for the web. Casio Exilim EX-F1 Slow-Mo Super Cam Full Review (Verdict: Totally Unique, Shockingly Powerful)

Eno on Barry Lyndon

Directors team for 'My Son'

Herzog and Lynch teaming on a low budget feature, Lynch producing a Jodorowsky film, has the whole world gone topsy-turvy? What's with all the crazy made-up sounding announcements coming out of Cannes?

CANNES -- Werner Herzog and David Lynch are teaming for 'My Son, My Son,' a horror-tinged murder drama based on a true story.

Herzog and his longtime assistant director Herbert Golder co-wrote 'Son,' loosely based on the true story of a San Diego man who acts out a Sophocles play in his mind and kills his mother with a sword. The low-budget feature will flash back and forth from the murder scene to the disturbed man's story. A guerrilla-style digital video shoot on Coronado Island is tentatively set for March.

In a separate development, Lynch's Absurda production company has attached Asia Argento and Udo Kier to star with Nick Nolte in Alejandro Jodorowsky's metaphysical gangster movie "King Shot."

Marilyn Manson is touted to appear as a prophet in the "Sin City"-style film, which producer Eric Bassett said has enough sex and violence to guarantee an NC-17 rating.

Twitch - Bad Lieutenant remake with Nicholas Cage and... Werner Herzog?

WTF?

No, seriously, WTF?

There's no way this is going to make it off the ground, and even if it does.. why? Genuinely bizarre.

How Bad Lieutenant makes for an audience-friendly hit is beyond me (And heck, MGM couldn’t sell the heroic story of Rescue Dawn into a hit, then how does a morally depraved lunatic-cop investigating the raping of nuns (oops, this time around it is Senegalese illegal immigrants and drugs) become palatable to the mainstream - Yes, they’re funny folk over at Millennium Films)
