Milliways Release 15, Serial Number 880512 - Waxy.org

The original Hitchhiker's Infocom game almost killed me when I was a kid, and now, finally the sequel has seen the light of day:

Andy Baio hit the jackpot:

From an anonymous source close to the company, I’ve found myself in possession of the “Infocom Drive” — a complete backup of Infocom’s shared network drive from 1989. This is one of the most amazing archives I’ve ever seen, a treasure chest documenting the rise and fall of the legendary interactive fiction game company. Among the assets included: design documents, private emails, employee phone numbers, sales figures, internal meeting notes, corporate newsletters, and the source code and game files for every released and unreleased game Infocom made.

Andy’s hosting two playable prototypes — playable I say — of Milliways: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the unreleased sequel to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. If you’re in your 30s (or older), you’ll be amazed at the game. If you’re in your 20s (or younger), you’ll be amazed that this is what computer games used to look like.

I've just played around with Milliways for a bit and there's not much to write home about, it's clearly unfinished. Most of the rooms are undescribed, notes like "one day there will be an elevator here" abound- it's a little like my game Hung Over Tech Support in that sense.

If you're interested in seeing the original Hitchhiker's game (albeit "improved" with "Graphics"), it's hosted here.

Alamo May/June Calandar

The new Alamo Calandar is viewable online; of interest at first glance, Brad Neely in person, some fantastic fest listings (Pinku movie retrospective!), Stars of the Lid and Luke Savisky , Pinapple Express with David Gordon Green in person. And they're adding a full bar, because they evidently want to kill me.

Bud Cort responds to Statesman's Garcia

Bud Cort responds to Chris Garcia's weird non-interview. I've met Chris a few times and he seems like a nice enough guy, but I agree that his 'interview' with Bud Cort was a disrespectful turd without any meaningful content. It told us more about Chris' weaknesses as an interviewer than it gave us insight into Mr. Cort's life and career.

"It's not for Everyone"

So, some of you may have noticed that there's a voicemail number on the main page now: 512-553-4365.
I've already gotten a few exploratory calls to it- "What is this number for?", "Is this a podcast?".
Yes, I'm gearing up to start doing a podcast, which will probably be the meat of site from then on out- most of the linkblogging will continue on, but it'll be done primarily via del.icio.us, and when I feel the need to comment extensively on something I'll just videotape it.

So why is it taking so long? Well, I'm kind of auditioning a few different services that would make the podcast workflow easy, integrated with the front page with a customizable player and a flash encode, as well as giving me mp4's and an iTunes compatible feed. I've been toying with SesameVault, which gives me nice server side transcoding and the tools to have everything automatically update on the front page of the site, but not a podcast-optimized rss feed which is kind of crucial- And then my old employers Mediatronica have been insisting that they will have some workable tool for me at some point. Now Blogger has added video uploads, which I haven't experimented with yet.

Then of course I have to actually start shooting shows. I haven't decided on a format or a tone.

So the answer is, yes, a podcast at some point. I don't want to go into it half-assed and then give up after a few months, so I'll start when I'm well and ready.
