David Fincher directing Charles Burns' Black Hole

Exciting, but also kind of scary: buried in this excerpt from a Variety article talking about David Fincher directing a segment for an upcoming Heavy Metal film:
Fincher recently became attached to direct Paramount’s adaptation of the Charles Burns graphic novel “Black Hole”

If you aren't familiar with the comic, it's one of a kind- personal, immediate, and at the same time wildly surreal and fantastic. A movie version could be great or it could absolutely ruin the mystique of the comic. We'll have to wait and see.

probertson: Kings of Power 4 Billion %

This will be boingboing'ed and digg'ed to death in about five seconds, but Paul Robertson (Pirate Baby's Cabana Battle Street Fight) just finished his new sprite-animation movie Kings of Power 4 Billion % and suffice to say, he's taken it to the next level. If you've ever admired the animation and attention to detail in side scrolling games like Metal Slug, but wondered what would happen if you fed one of the artists responsible angel-dust stuffed hoho's for a week locked in a clockwork-orange-style room that crammed uncut pop-culture down their brainhole 24/7, now you have your answer. Even if you aren't a geek, this is stunning stuff.

Stephy B's Birthday Party, Austin, TX- Tonight

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Oof

SXSW really took a lot out of me, between the parties/boozing/fooding of interactive and the three shows I played with Diagonals. Even though I felt like I didn't really get to do much, I still needed a week to recover. Unfortunately I ended up getting really drunk Tuesday night in-between Bud Cort's presentation of the amazing Altman flick Brewster McCloud and his own terrifically warped Ted and Venus (org. title Love in Venice). I was completely incapacitated all day yesterday, and I am dropping all booze, caffeine and crappy food until further notice. I need to hit the reset button after the last few weeks.

Some SXSW highlights, while I can still think of them; hanging out with Souris, Ryan Junell, George Oates, Karina Longworth, Nabeel Hyatt and a bunch of other cool nerdy people during the interactive festival. Seeing Motörhead. Seeing Goliath at the Paramount. Getting to play the Emo's inside stage finally.

I've been shooting a lot of video of bands this month and I'm going to have a DVD available this weekend. I might sell them for the price of postage or something if people are interested.

Horse Plus Donkey at Hole in the Wall

Some footage I shot of horse plus donkey at the beginning of the month. I'm collecting footage of Austin outsider bands right now and might put together a dvd.

Hung Over Tech Support

After drunkenly mentioning it to some people who make real games at a party during SXSW interactive, I have started tinkering with my piece of interactive fiction, Hung Over Tech Support again.

You're Not My Father - Paul Slocum

You’re Not My Father, by Paul Slocum, [Requires Quicktime plugin] is composed of a sequence of recreations of a 10 second scene from the television show Full House, overlaid with sound loops from the scene’s original music. The crews who re-shot the scene were recruited through Internet message boards and Craigslist; each was paid $150. Instructions for shooting the scene and delivering the footage were issued to the crews. To-date, the project includes participants from Austin, Cincinnati, Chicago, Dallas, Denton, London, and San Francisco.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - Terror Thursday: GOKE - BODYSNATCHER FROM HELL

I shouldn't even mention this screening because I don't want it to fill up to fast and risk not having a seat, but here you go:
Terror Thursday: GOKE - BODYSNATCHER FROM HELL
Rated Unknown; 84min; Director:Hajime Sato (1968)
RARE 35MM FILM SCREENING SPONSORED BY VULCAN VIDEO!!!

As far as I'm concerned, if Japan never made another movie before or after this senses-melting Technicolor annihilator, they'd still be the most entertaining nation in the third dimension. Every sound, hue, special effect and performance here is like nothing ever seen on film. Survivors of a mysterious plane crash are stalked by mucus-based interplanetary silver blobs bent on destroying mankind by reanimating human corpses. Mix in mascara-smeared male terrorists, genitaliaesque forehead growths, bubble-shaped saucers, massive psychotic frenzies and epilepsy-strobe anti-war propaganda and you've just scratched the surface of what this 84 minute hatefuck-psychedelia zombie/alien invasion skull-shredder has to offer. Obscenely underrated creator-director Sato had previously sharpened his teeth on gonzo Sonny Chiba monster epics like THE GOLDEN BAT and TERROR BENEATH THE SEA -- as well as a live action children's TV series called LITTLE SATAN (!!) -- but GOKE is far and away the pinnacle of his psychotically deranged genius.
