Word Association Double Features

This may or may not work, but either way it could be fun. One person gives a random word or subject, another person has to put together a double-feature inspired by that word or subject. Put your subjects in the comments and I'll add my double feature here. If you do the same thing on your own blog, tag the post "doublefeature".

I'll kick things off with an example:

"Werewolf Sex"

La BĂȘte

D: Walerian Borowczyk, France 1975
Lucy Broadhurst (Sirpa Lane), an heiress engaged to the idiot son of an impoverished Marquis, arrives at the family's chateau and hears stories of a 'beast' that inhabits the nearby woods. Lucy becomes obsessed with stories that a former lady of the house became overly friendly with the monster (if by overly friendly you mean gave a foot-job to). This would be another piece of eurotrash soft porn if not for the bizarre flourishes and a perverse sense of humor that make the movie unique and subtly, deeply wrong.

The Company of Wolves

My second favorite Angela Lansbury role after The Manchurian Candidate, The Company of Wolves is a goth-chick staple up there with The Hunger, but if you go into seeing it like I did, with the expectation of a straight genre movie, you may be pleasantly surprised by how weird and nuanced it is. Bonus points for Terrance Stamp as the Devil, who rides in a limousine and sells you male growth hormone.

Sleeping States - Rivers

I am really digging Sleeping States and Panda Bear right now. Looking forward to seeing Beach House again on the 7th.

Vintage anime: Evil Mickey Mouse invasion! ::: Pink Tentacle

"Toy Box Series, Episode 3: Picture Book 1936” (Omocha-Bako Series, Dai-3-Wa: Ehon 1936) is a 1934 propaganda-ish film about a future (1936) conflict started by a swarm of evil, bat-riding Mickey Mouse clones that descend on a tiny island inhabited by peace-loving dolls and cats (including a Felix lookalike)...

SXSW 2008

So I'm attending every part of SXSW this year, I was on the interactive advisory board, I have a little part in one of the films, and I just found out that the band I am in is playing a day show. Who is coming to town, and who is going to what? email/twitter/im me as stuff develops. I'm going to start putting my calendar together today.

A Hidden World of Awesomeness

Filmmaking Frenzy! BeastMaster

My friend Thomas, who I've helped on a few Alamo filmmaking contests, has posted his entry to the Be Kind Rewind! contest. If you think it's as funny as I do, log onto the filmmaking frenzy site and give it a good rating so more people will see it!
Update: Looks like Thomas has won the competition! Congrats!

Bud Cort! 2001, The Thing! I love the Alamo Drafthouse.

The Alamo Drafthouse is bringing Bud Cort to town for screenings of Brewster McCloud and Harold and Maude on March 18th. I've always had a soft spot for Bud Cort, who had a string of interesting roles (that unfortunately typecast him as a slightly creepy pretty-boy) in the 70's and survived a terrible car wreck before the 80's began, leaving him dealing with multiple plastic surgeries and rehab during what should have been the height of his career. He's held strong and continues to do great character work (Wes Anderson finally got to take his Hal Ashby fixation to it's logical conclusion by giving Bud a role as the kidnapped functionary in The Life Aquatic).

It looks like The Drafthouse and Red Bull are going to be putting on another outdoor showing of Dazed and Confused on March 12th (the last one was a reunion show in 2003 that got a good chunk of the original cast to show up). I'll be helping host, but I don't have a lot of details yet. Christ, I just love seeing myself prance around and grab my face as a fifteen year old over and over for the rest of my life. :) Let's all get toasty and re-live the magic.

April is going to bring screenings of 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Thing, and Blade Runner: The Final Cut. I haven't seen what print they've got of 2001, but I'm sure if they are having an event for it that it's probably pristine. I'm pretty sure I've seen the Thing print they've got at the last Cinemuerte festival and it was in great condition. If you missed the new cleaned up Blade Runner at the Paramount, make sure and catch it at the Alamo, it's really wonderful.

I've barely cracked the new Alamo Calandar and I'm already very excited.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - DEVILS ANGELS with Davie Allan live!

From Thomas:
If you dont know who Davie Allan is - that's alright - there's probably some Voxtrot show you can go cry at.
If you do know the name of the Fuzz Lord, have known his sting, or you wanna see John Cassavetes motorcycling cop faces into the pavement
