Sunshine

Spoiler warning- Danny Boyle's big, sometimes attractive mess hints at a movie that could have been, and then dissapoints with the one that is. Some of the criticisms I've read talk about being jarred by the weird move of dropping a ridiculous slasher plot into the last act. I agree partially. When a space-crazed character is dropped into the story, it's not just a misstep but a missed opportunity as well. Instead of running around killing off characters, he should have been driving them, and us, crazy too. Without the possibility of being convinced that the insane character may be right, the movie becomes flimsy and deflated, more running around, grunting, and playing football with the camera as we have come to expect.

Brian McBride and Luke Savisky tomorrow (Sat July 21st)

If this is anything like Luke's piece 'who stole the quiet day' which used Stars of the Lid music as its centerpiece, it'll be completely amazing.
The 9th installment of AMODA's Performance Series will feature Brian McBride (NYC), one half of the seminal drone band Stars of the Lid. McBride's performance will feature live accompaniment by the Imbroglio String Quartet and film projections by Luke Savisky. Opening the show will be local musicians Loren Dent and Steve Bernal on electronics and cello.

Drifting: A Director's Log: The Walk

A while back a fellow film blogger named David Lowery wrote me and asked if I would like to do one of several re-edits of a short film he had shot called The Outlaw Son. I figured that the other filmmakers involved would have better luck with the actual story and instead had fun grinding one scene down to almost a halt and making some woozy music to go over it instead. I dunno if it's worth anything, but it was kind of interesting and moody. David has just put the result up on his site.

Dandi Wind, Thursday @ Beauty Bar

Dandi Wind puts on a great show. Lots of cornea-searingly neon spandex and freaky headdresses. Check it out.
