If the house on Washington Square could talk

Fascinating story about the home and hoard of a hermit who collected massive piles of junk, kept meticulous diaries of his life and everything he did, and apparently liked to jerk-off to a loop of me getting spanked in Dazed. Life is weird.

If the house on Washington Square could talk: "Steve Sisk, a junk collector, spent 14 hours digging in one of the Dumpsters at 3001 Washington Square. He never met Mathews either, but he thinks he understands the way his mind worked.
[...]It was Sisk who looked over Mathews' extensive collection of X-rated videos, and who bothered to watch one of the homemade videos, which Sisk described as a continuous loop of a spanking scene from the movie 'Dazed and Confused.' It was Sisk who figured out Mathews' private video rating system, curious symbols that appear over and over again in his diaries. The symbols, he said, signify paddles.

GreenCine: Oz/Zone

As Kino releases a fresh version of Stalker, Andrej Tarkovsky's 1979 masterpiece of metaphysical science fiction, Cory Vielma traces its perhaps surprising similarities to a classic Hollywood musical: The Wizard of Oz.

Wholphin DVD - Zellners and Naisu No Mori!

Dave and Nathan's short Flotsam/Jetsam is going to be featured in the next Wholphin DVD, alongside a clip from Funky Forest. I just checked the Wholphin site and there's an interview with Funky Forest's directing team Naisu No Mori-

Q: My assistant is curious to know what is the most vivid dream you have ever had?

I: For some reason, I was living in a castle full of mice. We all were supposed to protect the castle from a gigantic broomstick ghost. I was the head of the strategic department, and fought with together with all the mice. I saw this dream two nights in a row, so I remember this clearly.

M: Ishii-san and Aniki were taking a bath with all these beautiful women from all around the world. But myself being a stoic guy decide not to join, and go outside, but while I am climbing up the hill and come to this huge front gate, I regret to myself, "I should have gone inside the tub..."

A: I become a bubble in the middle of space. I go back and forth from ballooning up to shrinking to a smaller size, so it was a ticklish dream. (I used to see this dream a lot between first grade to third grade.)

The festival just made it all the way to Japan!

Independent Online Edition > Features

Roger Clarke writing for the Independent about Carrie:

The film was cheap to make at $1.8m and a 50-day shooting schedule. The special effects were organised by Gregory M Auer and the blood was made of something called karo syrup and food colouring, even though Spacek had volunteered to have actual pig's blood spilled on her. When Carrie returns home after her prom meltdown, the script had called for the house (designed by Spacek's husband) to be destroyed by a volley of rocks. In the end, however, Auer's machine for hurling the rocks lacked the power to collapse the house. The shoot was running late at 4am and the police had been called about the noise, so De Palma opted for simply burning the house down.

Clearly, Clearly, Dark-Eyed Donna: Time and A Scanner Darkly

Senses of Cinema has a great piece about A Scanner Darkly and where it fits in with the rest of Rick's films. The piece reccomends the film not so much as a work about paranoia or drug addiction, but as a tragic love story.

Manhattan, Kansas - a documentary by Tara Wray

For some reason I put off seeing Tara Wray's wonderful documentary Manhattan, Kansas. Maybe it's because I've been having such a good month that I have been tiptoeing around anything that might bring me down, for some reason stuff about crazy parents really frightens me on some deep level. Why, I'm not sure, since I feel like I did alright in the parent department. I think there's something about having someone be your whole world, the source of everything you think you know- and then one day realizing they are flawed, that their view of the world is distorted - and as a result, so is yours. Anyway I'm sorry that I waited now. It's such a wonderful example of a person picking up a camera, asking for technical help and emotional support, and then stepping out of their comfort zone to heal themselves and invite viewers into their life. I think it should be on everyone's viewing list. It's honest, full of life.

Manhattan, Kansas is a personal documentary about a daughter coping with her mentally unstable mother. It delves into the complicated ways people care for one another, and offers insight into the mind of a parent struggling for physical and emotional survival, and the effects this has on those who love her.

Tara is selling copies of her video in handmade origami-style envelopes from her site.
