The cliché's are all true. This guy is fucking eeevil.
Here's what he has to say about the copyright reform movement- A movement devoted primarily to giving artists control over their copyrights, as opposed to the media conglomerates that use absolute copyright as a legal truncheon to extort money from any and all works that could possibly be construed as derivative, including parodies if they feel it threatens their "franchise". A movement that opposes Hollywood and record company crippling of new technology, not because 'everything should be free(?)' but because it's stupid. It doesn't protect content against real piracy (any reduction of the mountains of illegal media on the streets of the third world?) it just allows the Media Controllers to charge you over and over again for the same content (these are the minds behind such dubious inventions as the 24-hour-lifespan disintegrating DVD), and eek away your rights over what you buy, bit by bit. Upset about illegal file sharing? Provide a reasonably priced, easy to use alternative and people will use it instead. If you provide better quality, more reliable downloads, with better selection, you will win. Criminalizing P2P software with legitimate uses is not the answer.
I'm an artist, I get residual money from DVD sales and cable-casts of my work that is really important in keeping my family afloat. I don't want people to pirate my movies. But I know that IP extremism and broken media formats are not the way to protect my income. It just doesn't work. I would make more money if people could legally download and manage their media- mainly because when you give people a bunk deal they will invariably tell you to fuck off and they will steal the media instead, no matter how much you screw it up trying to stop them.
Anyway, I digress. Here's what Gates has to say about it.
I'd say that of the world's economies, there's more that believe in intellectual property today than ever. There are fewer communists in the world today than there were. There are some new modern-day sort of communists who want to get rid of the incentive for musicians and moviemakers and software makers under various guises. They don't think that those incentives should exist.
I'm a commie? You're a bloated plutocrat out of touch with anything but his own wallet. And on top of that you are a propagandist. The above characterization either demonstrates a profound fear and ignorance about copyright reform, or a willful misrepresentation. I think it's the latter. The guy is a reptile.
I don't want to even get into the sneering, condescending comments he makes about the iPod and how all other devices will be 'open' to his closed media format.
Professor Lessig responds, more in shocked disbelief than in rebuttal.

In other news:
During a demonstration of digital photography with a soon-to-be-released Nikon camera, a Windows Media Center PC froze and wouldn't respond to Gates' pushing of the remote control.
Later in the 90-minute presentation, a product manager demonstrated the ostensible user-friendliness of a video game expected to hit retail stores in April, Forza Motor Sport. But instead of configuring a custom-designed race car, the computer monitor displayed the dreaded "blue screen of death" and warned, "out of system memory."

I concur. I'm in the same boat as well. I get residuals from projects and frankly if 100, 1000 or even millions people download my movies I don't think it's going to affect me that much.
I'm really not worried about people quitting going to the movies or unsubscribing their cable altogether. And don't get me started on disposable DVDs. What a worthless piece of processed petroleum.
Bill Gates is joining the uberclass of assholes who don't really have any interest in creating something better or even something "good" in the first place. If he can sell you shit with a shiny label and you buy it, he's a happy man.
His goals have nothing to do with improving life for anybody. If he had taken a different approach to work he might have gone down well historically. But he has cemented his path as a sadistic capitalist.
Boy Wonder
