The right way to do a special edition DVD and The wrong way.
Someone should tell the people who made the ad in that second link that Rick Linklater is refusing to do audio commentary, so they should probably stop touting it as a feature, much less a 'hilarious' one. Evidently Universal is not going to use the excellent documentary and making of footage that Kahane Korn shot for the disc, and they are stooping to the lowest common denominator with the advertising and packaging. The extras they boast instead are pretty paltry, a 'side splitting 70's-like mock PSA on the dangers of partying' and some extra pieces of footage that were swept off the cutting room floor. Right. Kahane's documentary contained droves of 16mm footage of the actual making of the movie including interviews with everyone involved. She followed it up with great current interviews with all the actors at the 10th anniversary screening. We also had an opportunity to show the real original poster for the film, a great piece of black-light art by Frank Kozik. It's nice that there's going to be a new transfer, but other than that, this new Dazed DVD doesn't have much to offer. Which is a real shame considering how much we had to offer it.
Update: There may be hope for a future Criterion edition featuring all our extras. Keep your fingers crossed!
